JAL FARM(千葉県成田市)

【Joint Release】Shelltas and JAL Agriport Launch Joint Verification Project for Sustainable Agriculture
- Evaluating Growth, Yield, and Quality Using "SeaFect®," a Scallop Shell-Derived Calcium Material -
Shelltas Co., Ltd. (HQ: Ota-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Hirokazu Tokuda; hereinafter "Shelltas") and JAL Agriport Co., Ltd. (HQ: Narita City, Chiba Prefecture; CEO: Yusuke Yabumoto; hereinafter "JAL Agriport"), a subsidiary of Japan Airlines (JAL), are pleased to announce the launch of a joint verification project aimed at realizing sustainable agriculture that balances agricultural productivity with environmental conservation. This one-year verification project will be conducted at "JAL FARM," an agricultural farm operated by JAL Agriport in Narita City, Chiba Prefecture, with the goal of promoting a circular economy through the utilization of unused resources while ensuring the stable production of high-quality food.

To maintain stable food production in the face of climate change, innovative agricultural approaches are needed to protect natural capital—such as soil, water, and biodiversity—while enhancing productivity. The material used in this project, "SeaFect®," is a marine-derived calcium material made from Hokkaido scallop shells, a fishery byproduct, processed using Shelltas' proprietary calcination technology. Over the past four years, Shelltas has applied SeaFect® to various crops, including tomatoes and sweet potatoes, confirming positive effects on fruit size, sugar content, and growth rate.
To establish these accumulated field insights into rigorous, practical data, Shelltas and JAL Agriport have partnered to conduct full-scale joint testing in actual cultivation environments.
This verification project will focus on two crops—strawberries and sweet potatoes—evaluating the impact of SeaFect® application and application methods on crop growth and quality. While keeping base cultivation conditions (such as fertilization and irrigation) consistent across all test plots, data will be collected under the following conditions:

Overview of Joint Verification Project
Target crops
Strawberries, Sweet Potatoes
Test Period
October 2026 – approx. 1 year
Location
JAL FARM (Narita City, Chiba Prefecture)
Test plots
① Control Plot: Standard cultivation without SeaFect®
② Soil Application Plot: Diluted SeaFect® applied to soil around root zone
③ Foliar Spray Plot: Diluted SeaFect® sprayed directly on leaves
④ Combined Plot: Combination of ② and ③
Base conditions
SeaFect® diluted 200x, applied once weekly (*adjusted as needed based on crop growth)
Evaluation Items
[Strawberries] Plant/leaf growth, fruit size, yield count/weight, sugar content, appearance/quality
[Sweet Potatoes] Vine length/growth, tuber size, tuber count/total weight, sugar content
Evaluation
schedule
Growth status recorded monthly in principle; yield and quality recorded primarily at harvest
Using these trial insights, both companies will explore sustainable farming methods that maintain yields while optimizing fertilizer and pesticide use. Future evaluations will assess varying SeaFect® dosages, soil conditions, and nutrient runoff.
Executive Comments
